With its outstanding offering of flagship shops, department stores and exclusive boutiques, London is one of the greatest cities in the world for shopping. And in true traditional fashion, the new year signals one of the best times to hit the high street with the arrival of London’s legendary January sales.
Beginning on Boxing Day and continuing until the end of January, there’s still plenty of time to visit the city’s top shopping destinations and pick up a few bargains. Here’s our pick of the best places for bargain hunters, shopaholics and fashionistas to visit during the January sales in London.
Harvey Nichols
With its flagship store located in the heart of Knightsbridge, Harvey Nichols has plenty of luxury brands and designer items to choose from. Pick up some stylish new sunglasses, treat yourself to a new handbag and buy designer makeup at discounted prices. Brands such as Marc Jacobs, Chloe, Paul Smith, Lanvin and Stella McCartney are marked down to up to 50 per cent.
Harrods
Harrods is known as one of London’s most extravagant department stores, and each year on Boxing Day, its January sale is opened by a celebrity (this year’s guest of honour is yet to be confirmed) to the cheers of an excited and expectant crowd. As usual, the store will be offering great bargains on many products, from food to furniture and everything in between.
Fortnum and Mason
Centrally located next to Piccadilly Circus, Fortnum and Mason is one of the oldest and most famous department stores in London. Here, shoppers will be able to get discounts of up to 60 per cent on clothing, chocolate, tea, accessories and homeware, among many other products. One of the most traditional shops in London, this is a great place to pick up some souvenirs.
Liberty
Prestigious department store Liberty offers one of the most important January sales in London for fans of avant-garde fashion. A broad range of luxury items will be available at bargain rates, including autumn/winter collections from top designers and items from brands like Cacharel, Lladro Collectibles, and Burgess Dorling and Leigh – all discounted by up to 60 per cent.
Selfridges
One of the most popular January sales in London, Selfridges will be offering enormous discounts on their designer clothing and accessories from 9am on Boxing Day. In previous years, shoppers have begun queuing in the middle of the night to be one of the first into the store at opening time, but even if you’re not an early bird, there’ll be plenty to browse here.
Fenwick
Huge savings on fashion items are available during the January sale at Fenwick on Bond Street – the store encompasses five floors of coveted labels, as well as the Fenwick spa. More traditional in its outlook, this is the place to come for elegant accessories and clothing at discounted prices.
One New Change
Combine shopping and sightseeing at the One New Change shopping mall. Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel designed the building, and from its public roof terrace, you can enjoy a great view of St Paul’s Cathedral. Find excellent bargains at the shopping venue’s 60 stores, including high street favourites like H&M, Banana Republic, Reiss, Hugo Boss and All Saints.
